For just the 4th time in franchise history, with all 4 coming within the last 7 seasons, our Houston Texans will not be participating in the 1st round of the NFL Draft.

Anderson
Right around this time last year the Texans had two 1st round picks scheduled for the '24 draft, their own and the 3rd and final 1st round pick from Cleveland in the Deshaun Watson trade. On day 1 of last year's draft they traded their own 1st rounder to Arizona to move up to #3 overall where they selected Will Anderson. That was right after the Texans took C.J. Stroud at #2. That left the Texans with just one 1st round pick for this year's draft, the one they got from Cleveland, which fell at #23 overall. About a month ago they traded that pick to the Vikings in return for their pick in the 2nd round at #42, a 6th round pick at #188, and a 2nd round pick next year.

Diggs
The Texans then took that 2nd rounder for next year and traded it to the Bills for 4 time Pro Bowl, 1 time All Pro WR Stefon Diggs. The addition of Diggs gives the Texans one of, if not the best, WR rooms in the NFL, to go along with Nico Collins and Tank Dell. So after an explosive 1st round last year where the Texans took Stroud and Anderson in back-to-back picks at the top of the draft, they will wait things out until day 2 to get their 2024 draft underway.
That gives us a chance to talk about the biggest news coming out of Texansville this week, that had a very old school Texans-like, has nothing to do with football vibe to it. Throughout most of their existence the Texans have been mediocre at best and some of the more heated conversations among fans wasn't about their play on the field. It was about things like the roof to the stadium being open or not, or which one of the half dozen uniform combos they liked best.

Regular Home
Well, staying on point with regards to uniforms, the Texans revealed a new set of uniforms for this upcoming season that include 2 new helmets. Their main look will continue to be the deep steel blue jerseys, mainly for home games, and the white jerseys on the road. The blue, however, appears to be a little darker than before, almost black. Both of those uniforms will be worn with the classic dark blue helmet, again appearing to be a darker blue, almost black, with the familiar Texans bull logo.

Regular Road
The road white jersey has some significant changes. For 22 seasons the Texans had red numbers on their white jerseys, outlined in blue , and had blue stripes over their shoulder pads from the back to the front. The white unis will now have the numbers in the darker blue/black, outlined in red, and the stripes are designed so that it looks like bull horns charging at you. Again, both of these combos will have the classic Texans helmet with the bull logo. I assume the Texans will contiunue wearing all white for their home opener, otherwise it will be white jerseys with the dark blue pants.
So that's 2 sets of uniforms. Apparently the NFL is allowing for at least 4 different uniforms for teams to wear this year because that's how many the Texans revealed this week. It also appears that the NFL is allowing at least 3 different helmets because, again, that's how many the Texans broke out with.

Battle Red
We'll start with battle red, because that's always been the Texans alternate jersey. The NFL has allowed teams to wear an alternate 3rd jersey for one game since around 2003, maybe 2004. The Texans will continue with the red, but the tweak is instead of the white numbers, they will use the darker blue outlined in white. But that's not the biggest change with this uniform combo.

New Horn Logo
Last year the Texans switched to a new red helmet that they wore for 2 games. They wore the red helmets once with the red jerseys (Battle Red Day), and for one game in the blue jerseys, which I believe was the color rush version with the red numbers instead of their traditional white. This red helmet looked like the blue one they'd worn for every game they ever played in for the past 21 years, with the bull logo, except is was red. This year the red helmet will NOT have the bull logo on it. Instead, it will have what is supposed to be bullhorns on each side, sort of like the Eagles helmets with their eagle wings on each side.
And finally, if that's not enough, their will be a 4th uniform combo debuting this season, with another different helmet. Recently the old Houston Oilers Columbia Blue colors have been making a comeback in H-Town. The Rockets had a jersey combo a couple of years ago with those colors. The University of Houston had a uniform combo for 1 game this past season that almost looked exactly like the Oilers. The only difference was UH had the word Houston on their helmets instead of an oil derrick. Even the Rice Owls donned a Columbia Blue uni for a game last year. The UH version though, caught the eye of Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk, daughter of Bud Adams, who of course, founded the Oilers in 1960 and moved them to Tennessee in 1997. The Titans sent UH a cease and desist letter to stop wearing the Oilers colors and uniform design, which the Titans still own.

H-Town
With the reemergence of the old Oilers light blue, the Texans wanted to get into that history, but because of the Titans being so head up their butts about their precious Columbia Blue, a new version of that light blue came to be called Houston Blue. This was also paying tribute to the Houston police Department who for years in the city, drove the light blue police cars. And it's worth noting that the city of Houston has an official flag, which was made official in 1915, before Bud Adams was even born, and that flag has the city crest on a light blue background. So suck it Adams family.
It also should be noted that the Texans wanted to pay tribute to a relatively new nickname for Houston. No, not Space City or the Bayou City, but as the kids now call it, H-Town. So the Texans roll out a 4th uniform taking all of this into account. This uniform will be the very dark blue, almost black jersey with red numbers, highlighted with the light "Houston" blue. The helmet will also be dark blue and the logo will simply be a "Houston" blue H outlined in red, representing "H-Town".
So that's what the Texans will look like this season if you happen to be scrolling through channels looking for their games and don't recognize them. Of course all teams are doing something similar so it's getting harder to recognize any teams playing anymore.
And that's our Day 1 of the Texans 2024 draft. We'll get back to actual football related things on Day 2 when the Texans finally get to make picks.
